Lega Janus Initiation Figure

A wooden ancestor figure with two faces, made by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Figures of this kind were used during initiation ceremonies and served a mnemonic function, assisting in the telling of ancestor stories and the depiction of proverbs. The heart-shaped face is covered with white kaolin. The figure is in good condition with traces of ritual use.
