West Africa, Mali, Dogon culture, ca. late 19th to mid- 20th century CE. A cast bronze or brass figure of a man standing upright with arms outstretched. Simplified limbs and facial features with linear markings on the chin - perhaps tattoos or scarification. Dogon figures are used in religious ceremonies and sacrifice, serving as magical items that demonstrated the great skill of the blacksmith, a figure that wielded prestige in Dogon society.
