Yoruba Standing Female Figure

A tall, slender female figure hand-carved from a hard wood, standing on an integral circular platform with delineated legs and a small bulging element at the centre of the chest. The tubular head has wide eyes, a prominent nose, full lips and cupped ears beneath an upswept plaited coiffure. The distended abdomen and the arms grasping the breasts suggest pregnancy, and the figure was probably a fertility image kept in the home.
