Kuba Palm Wine Cup

A carved wood palm wine cup, or mbwoong ntey, with a finely carved ancestor face and geometric designs accented with mineral pigments. The surface shows handling and wear. Among the Kuba, everyday objects such as drinking cups could express rank and status through the quality of their carving, and cups intended for rulers were often carved as a human head with a coiffure reserved for royalty.
