Luba Copper Currency Cross (handa)

A cast copper cross of the standardised form known as handa, from the Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Because of the value of the copper, crosses of this type were used in trade as a pre-coinage means of payment and were exchanged over long distances. Most colonial administrations prohibited such money forms in the early twentieth century in order to establish their own currencies.
