Roman Iron Nail

Roman. Nail. Circa 1st century AD. Iron (150 mm x 12 mm x 12 mm, 29.35 g.). Long nail with square shaft. In the summer of 1960, a pit was discovered in Inchtuthil, the site of a Roman legionary fortress overlooking the north bank of the River Tay southwest of Blairgowrie, Perth and Kinross, Scotland (Roman Caledonia) containing 875,400 iron nails. Marketed for decades as "crucifixion" nails, it is probable that these are the same style and types that would have been used however very improbable that those nails would have come from this manufacturing site.
